Overcome the Yips Unconsciously in Your Mind

So what are the Yips and is it physical, neurological or in the mind? I haven’t worked with anyone who has a physical or neurological impediment that directly caused their Yips. So it’s most likely to be in the mind and something you can change with the help of techniques like hypnosis and NLP.

What do we know about the yips and where does it come from? For most people it just seems to creep up on them. Often it happens the first time, just when it really matters, when they’re feeling a high level of emotion and stress, maybe a putt to win a competition, maybe with a few more people than usual watching them. And they miss a shot. They suddenly feel angry, embarrassed or maybe just downright stupid. Whatever it is, the combination of feelings locks the memory of that shot to those feelings and the seed of the Yips is sown. They have one bad experience at a critical time and they start worrying about playing that shot again. That makes them feel worse, so they fear the next shot even more. You can see the same thing happening with people who struggle to hit shots over water, or have a hole or course they “just can’t play”.

So what’s in this program to help me Overcome the Yips? Three freestanding golf hypnosis sessions that each approach your problem from a different angle to help you to overcome your fears, anxiety and embarrassment of the Yips. Also included is a very effective technique from the world of NLP for you to learn and take out on the course to help you relax in the situations where you used to panic.

Coping with the Yips

The first session is entitled “Coping with the Yips” and it treats your “fear” of the Yips as if it had been a full blown phobia, such as a fear of flying or public speaking. Treating it in that way allows you to rapidly learn to get over it and see your old yip problem as something that used to happen to someone else; someone from your past. There’s a fun element too with you taking your seat in your own private grandstand on a wonderful golf course somewhere in your imagination. Yes, I know that sounds a bit odd, but your imagination knows no bounds.

No more Yips – Enough is Enough!

If you kept doing something silly and annoying, over and over, week in and week out, in other areas of your life, then pretty soon you’d lose your temper with yourself and you’d probably say something like “Enough is Enough!”

This session will access a number of embarrassing and ridiculous experiences of your fear of the yips and play them back in your mind over and over until you say “Enough is Enough” to yourself.

Freeing yourself from the Yips

I know this may seem odd, but the biggest problem with the yips is not the fact that you can Yip a shot, chip or putt. What is so disturbing is the anticipation, fear and anxiety that you might yip the shot. Those negative emotions increase the likelihood of the thing you fear most.

This third hypnosis session helps you unconsciously associate feelings of confidence and relaxation to every memory you ever had of your old Yips problem. As a result, you’ll remember that you used to have the yips, but without the damaging negative emotions.

Circle of Excellence NLP Technique

One of the great things about the three hypnosis sessions in this program is that they work primarily with your unconscious mind. That means that while they are doing their work and starting to deliver the results you are looking for, you are not consciously aware of actually doing anything different.

This NLP technique is a great supplement and something you can consciously do on the golf course to help you Overcome the Yips. Once you’ve built up a strong series of positive memories and resources into your imaginary Circle of Excellence, you’ll be consciously in control of using them to replace the negative emotions of fear and anxiety with positive and resourceful ones.
